New kontiki does the trick

A dozen good snapper just off the beach was reward for a couple of local fishos using the new light weight Wavefisher kontiki.

Dennis “Digger” Kerrigan and a mate launched the Wavefisher at Marine Parade, and within minutes were pulling in a dozen good sized fish just 500m offshore on Easter Monday. The fish were caught on bonito bait, with a couple of five minute shots and left the line out for only 15 minutes.

Closer inspection showed the snapper had been feeding on mainly shellfish such as tuatua, coming in close with the warm sea temperatures.

The Mount Maunganui manufactured Wavefisher is the latest evolution in electric kontiki fishing. It is lightweight, using light, powerful batteries and a self-correcting steering rudder. It collapses down for easy carrying and stowage, ideal for camper vans.

The Kontiki system has autopilot steering, a smartradio linked programmer and long-lasting lightweight Lithium-ion Polymer battery packs.

The reels are loaded with braid, unlike most kontikis which have nylon. The braid resists stretching and tangling and also avoids pressure loadings on the reel.

Wavefisher designer Mike Finnegan has also developed a revolutionary automatic trace feeder system, so the operator doesn’t have to hold back the force of the kontiki while attaching traces.

Using the lightweight Wavefisher electric winch with 1500m of thin 300lb non-stretch dyneema line, fishos can easily fish New Zealand beaches without the need for vehicle access.

You can use the new hands-free Autofeed Traceboard or the 25 traces can be clipped on to stoppered mainline from the Folding Traceboard.

There is even the option of running two lines so the fishing line is set and the Wavefisher comes back to the beach.
