Women of all ages and fitness levels are invited to enter the annual Generation Homes Women’s Triathlon at Pilot Bay in Mount Maunganui on Sunday, February 26.

Now in its fourth year, the entry-level event celebrates the ‘have-a-go’ philosophy and includes a 400m swim, a 10km cycle and a 4km run or walk.

Participants can register as individuals, two or three-person teams or in a special mother-daughter –racing as individuals – category. Girls must be aged 11 or older to take part.

Event director Miranda Clark says entries are tracking “significantly higher” than previous years.

“The first 600 people to enter will receive one of our amazing registration bags so we’re encouraging everyone to get in quick.

“There’s more than $10,000 in spot prizes to be won, plus we’re giving away two major prizes including a flat screen TV and Avanti bike.”

Free group training sessions are held each week leading up to the triathlon. The next session on Tuesday, January 31, includes an open-water swim and short run or walk in Pilot Bay.

“The training sessions are non-competitive and designed to help novice triathletes develop their skills so they complete the event with confidence,” says Miranda.

This year, photographers will be stationed throughout the course capturing all the action and participants are welcome to download their favourite shots free-of-charge after the event.

National top 10 residential building company Generation Homes has been a major sponsor of the women’s triathlon since 2013.

“The event encourages women and young girls to support each other, get active and give triathlons a go,” says Lyndon Marshall, regional director of Generation Homes Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty.

“We’re proud to be part of a great sporting event that helps build a strong sense of community.”

Profits from the Generation Homes Women’s Triathlon fund youth programmes and infrastructure for the Tauranga Triathlon Club.

Online registrations can be made until Wednesday, February 22, 2017.
