A man critically injured when the boat he was aboard struck rocks near Cook’s Beach Whitianga, remains in a critical condition.

The 6.5m aluminium hulled craft with four men on board struck the rocks at speed about 10.30pm on Saturday.

Locals went to their assistance and brought three of the men off. The seriously injured man was taken off by a rescue helicopter.

Maritime NZ communications advisor Vince Cholewa says the incident involving the boat Online has been referred to Maritime NZ by police.

Maritime NZ has started initial inquiries.

“We don’t know who was driving, we don’t know if alcohol was involved,” says Whitianga Coastguard operations manager Graham Caddie.

“We’ve got a debrief with Maritime NZ and the harbor master tonight to go over this thing to try and reconstruct and swap information, that’s all I can say at this stage. Once its handed to Maritime NZ that’s it, we are all on the side line.”
