Police are reminding public about safety around water related activities, after a kayaker got into trouble near Rabbit Island on Monday.

Police were called just after 2.30pm to help the man after he became unwell while out at sea.

A rescue boat was deployed, the man was brought back to shore and was taken to hospital by Ambulance for medical treatment.

A police spokesperson says the incident has created a need to remind public about safety on water.

“Advice for kayakers is as follows:

  • Always wear a lifejacket
  • Carry two means of communication with you on board
  • Check weather conditions before you get out on the water
  • No alcohol
  • Know your limits and the limitations of the kayak you are using
  • Tell someone where you are, and when you will be back

“Coastguard also hold regular boating courses which can be helpful for preparing people for the water,” says police.
