Peter Burling’s crewmates had to tell him he’s won World Sailor of the Year, again – this time while he was on the mainsheet on board Team Brunel in the Volvo Ocean Race.

The Tauranga sailor and successful Team New Zealand helmsman was previously named sailor of the year in 2015 with 49er crewmate Blair Tuke.

Peter and Sir Russell Courts are the only New Zealanders to have won the award twice, so far.

"Huge congrats mate, world sailor of the year! Well-deserved. Love you heaps. Hope all going well for you. Mum and Dad" read the message from Richard and Heather Burling.

"It’s just awesome, really cool. It’s been a really cool year up in Bermuda, it’s just really awesome to get that accolade – but we’re pushing hard here. Struggling a bit at the moment but it’s alright,” says Peter.

When asked what it meant to get a message like that from his parents, he says it’s ‘pretty cool’.

“I’m pretty stoked they could share the news and get a message through. Thanks for all the support.

“It’s been a pretty amazing year and there are so many people that have helped us and the team out along the way.

“When you’re part of Team New Zealand you know you are just a small part of the entire 90 person team. It was absolutely awesome.”
